Propagation Theory for Electronic Warfare Webcourse
Propagation Theory for Electronic Warfare
Classification: Unclassified
Date: Thursday, September 4
Time: 1:00-4:00 PM EDT (5:00-8:00 PM UTC/GMT, 6:00-9:00 PM UK)
Instructor: Mr. Dave Adamy
Location: LIVE Online Webcast
Course Description:
This is a practical, hands-on Web based course which will provide easy to use tools for important Electronic Warfare calculations involving radio propagation. You will learn to solve intercept and jamming problems without the requirement for complex math. The course is three hours, broken into three sessions with a 10 minute Q & A period at the end of each session.
As soon as you register for the course, you will be sent a link to access the webcourse as well as a set of problem work sheets to download. You will also be sent an antenna and propagation slide rule to use for working problems during the course. You will need to have a scientific calculator that allows logarithmic functions.
Course outline
First Hour
Important EW calculations: A discussion of the types of calculations used in EW, including intercept and jamming of radar and communication signals. This will take a half hour. Then, the coverage of propagation theory will start. First, there will be a discussion of dB numbers and equations, then we will discuss antenna parameter trade-offs such as the calculation of the gain of a parabolic antenna from antenna diameter, operating frequency, and antenna efficiency. The antenna calculations will be presented three ways: as simple dB formulas worked on a scientific calculator, Nomographs, and non-mathematical calculations using the slide rule. The session includes exercises to use the techniques taught.
Second Hour
Propagation calculations: The one way link equation. For free space and near-Earth transmission paths will be explained. This will give you three ways to make these calculations: simple dB formulas (for the calculator), Nomographs, and calculations using the slide rule. The session will include exercises to use the techniques taught.
Third Hour
EW propagation exercises: This session will include calculations for the intercept of Communication signals and of radar signals (as by a radar warning or ELINT receiver). It will also include jamming formulas for communications and radar signals. The material in this session will be mainly involve problems solved with a scientific calculator using simple dB formulas.
