Canada is now a "sanctions hawk". The traditional view that Canadian trade controls are less aggressive than or at least similar to their US counterparts is no longer accurate and is causing significant compliance and enforcement challenges for Canadian as well as US companies operating in Canada.
Those firms that fail to address fundamental differences in the substance, administration and enforcement of trade controls north of the border are exposing themselves to significant financial and reputational consequences.
This webinar will cover the most important developments in Canadian economic sanctions and export and technology transfer controls, with particular focus on their relationship and interaction with US measures, including:
-
Canadian controls on the export and transfer of US-origin goods and technology
-
Canadian sanctions and export controls that are more aggressive and cumbersome than those of the United States – including those targeting Russia, Ukraine, Iran, Belarus, North Korea, and encryption goods and technology
-
How Canada’s Defence Production Act (the Controlled Goods Program) and defence export controls work with US ITAR, including continuing problems with the interaction between the regimes
-
Conflicts where compliance with US controls violates Canadian law – including human rights and employment law and Cuba blocking measures
-
Addressing unique challenges in dealing with Canadian administration and enforcement
-
Iran and Cuba - what to expect in 2016
