Advanced Encryption Classification: Learning By Doing
Practice Makes Perfect: A Webinar that Combines Hands-On Exercises, Discussions, and Instruction.
Participants will receive several case studies/classification exercises in advance of the webinar. The case studies will present data sheets of hypothetical products made for aerospace applications, computing and networking, communications, data security, oil and gas, and medical industries.This webinar is for export compliance officers, engineers, and legal practitioners who have experience with product classification and the use of encryption technologies in hardware and software applications. We will provide participants with classification exercises to complete prior to the webinar. During the webinar we will use a combination of instruction and discussion of the exercises for a “practice makes perfect” approach to learning how to assess jurisdiction and classification for products with data security features.
This combination of hands-on exercises, expert instruction, and participation in real-time question and answer sessions will be a unique opportunity to enhance your understanding of Category 5 Part II classifications. Knowing how to gather information from within your company in order to do classifications correctly will enable you to assign the correct USML/CCL category correctly and keep the necessary technical information as required by the regulations.
This webinar will provide PowerPoint slides and notes and include video and commentary from Felice Laird who is a leading expert on US encryption export controls and has 30 years’ experience in training on US export controls. Webinar participants are invited to submit questions during the webinar; the final 30 minutes of the webinar will be allotted to answering attendees' questions. Prerequisite: Participants should understand fundamental EAR issues and have at least basic familiarity with Category 5 Part II EAR classifications.

Felice Laird
Webinar Instructor and Senior Consultant
Felice Laird has over twenty years' experience helping companies comply with the US Export Administration and International Traffic in Arms Regulations. Felice specializes in transactional work, reviewing clients' product lines to establish licensing requirements and then providing guidance on how best to deal with any government restrictions on export. Felice is a subject matter expert in encryption export controls and has helped both large and small firms navigate the complex restrictions on data security technologies.
Prior to becoming a consultant, Felice worked at the Department of Commerce in what is now the Bureau of Industry and Security. She also worked as an International Trade Analyst at the law firm of Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton and Garrison and as an Export Compliance Administrator for GTE Corp (now Verizon).
Felice served on the encryption working group of the President’s Export Council Subcommittee on Export Administration (PECSEA), as well as serving as a PECSEA member during the Bush Administration. Felice is active in the National Council on International Trade and Development and TechAmerica’s Export Committee. She has a BA from the University of New Hampshire and a MS in International Business from the American University.
