The Basics of Koreas Export Controls: Expand Your Market and Stay in Compliance

The Basics of Korea’s Export Controls: Expand Your Market and Stay in Compliance

It's export controls “Gangnam style”!  Korea’s export control system is as dynamic and sophisticated as the hip district of Seoul that served as inspiration for one of the most globally popular songs ever.  And whether you’re one of the many Korean or multinational firms with offices in the Gangnam District, or Korea serves as one of your major manufacturing locations in the Asia Pacific, or Korea is a source of technology, equipment, or components for your operations elsewhere (especially if you’re in the semiconductors, machinery, telecommunications and information technology, or automotive and aerospace industries), chances are you’ll be dealing with the Korean export control system if you haven’t already.

Korea is a proactive member of all four of the major multilateral export control regimes and  (Wassenaar Arrangement et al.) and its system is among the most comprehensive and advanced systems in the Asia Pacific, if not globally.  Almost two-thirds of Korea’s exports go to China, the United States, EU27, and ASEAN countries, and those exports grew 25% on average annually from 2010 to 2012.  The Korean government has worked to keep pace with these trends by instituting licensing and compliance requirements that align with the highest international standards. These can be very manageable if you understand the system and how to work with it.  This webinar intends to assist you in doing both, and help your Korea-related business move as smooth as Psy himself!

In particular, this webinar in designed to:

  • Provide a comprehensive look at key provisions in Korea’s export control laws and regulations;
  • Clarify the scope of Korea’s controls on trade in strategic goods and technologies;
  • Address the application of Korea’s export controls to hand-carries, intangible transfers of technology, and encryption;
  •  Highlight the latest changes to Korea’s control list and how it compares to the Commerce Control List (CCL) and EU Dual-Use List (as well as Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong control lists);
  •  Explain Korea’s export licensing procedures and documentation requirements in detail;
  • Introduce how to take advantage of Korea’s online licensing systems and compliance tools;
  •  Offer tips on developing a “localized” internal compliance program for your Korea operations;
  • Note the potential penalties for noncompliance and if they can be mitigated through self-disclosure.

Our The Basics of Korea’s Export Controls: Expand Your Market and Stay in Compliance webinar will provide PowerPoint slides and include live video and commentary from Jay Nash who specializes in non-US trade controls and compliance.
